AI Readiness Checklist for Small Businesses
Many companies want AI, but not every company is ready for it today. Readiness is less about hype and more about whether the business has enough process clarity and operating discipline to turn AI into measurable value.
1. Do you have a repetitive workflow?
AI creates the strongest ROI where work repeats often: support questions, document processing, internal search, lead qualification, scheduling, and reporting. If every task is unique, automation value is harder to capture.
2. Is your process already somewhat defined?
AI performs best when the current workflow is understandable. If the team handles the same work in ten different ways, the first step is process cleanup, not model deployment.
3. Is your data usable?
Data does not need to be perfect, but it should be accessible. If information is trapped across inboxes, spreadsheets, PDFs, and undocumented systems, a readiness phase can still help organize what matters.
4. Can the team review outputs?
Good AI rollouts keep humans in the loop. Someone should own review, escalation, and quality checks during the early stages so the system improves without risking trust.
5. Do you know what success looks like?
Before investing, define the KPI: faster response time, fewer hours spent manually, better conversion, lower error rate, or improved visibility. AI works best when success is measurable.
